'Celerio Will be a Game Changer'

Maruti Suzuki has for long introduced market defining models in the Indian market, from the iconic Maruti 800 to the Swift, which opened up the premium hatchback segment in the country.
And the newly-launched Celerio is promising to be another segment creator.
Unveiled in the city on Friday, the Celerio is at first glance, a small, understated car with the minimal lines and no-nonsense look of the quintessential Maruti product. But what’s exciting about the car is its efficient and low-priced, auto gear shift option.
While there have been automatic transmission options in several other cars released in the last few years, high costs and lower fuel efficiency made them options that the Indian customer was unwilling to indulge in.
“We hope that with both issues that customers raise with automatics addressed, the Celerio will be a game changer in the Indian market,” said Manohar Bhat, vice-president, sales.
Priced at Rs 4.01 lakh and Rs 4.27 lakh respectively, the Lxi and Vxi variants of the Celerio come with automatic transmission variants that cost only Rs 40,000 more, firmly placing them in the below Rs 5 lakh segment.
The Zxi, which doesn’t have an automatic variant, comes in at Rs 4.57 lakh with airbags, ABS and security systems available in the Zxi (optional) at Rs 5.01 lakh.
“Automatic variants normally cost around Rs 1 lakh more than the manual ones,” pointed out Takahiko Hashimoto, executive officer, marketing and sales. “We’ve managed to reduce the gap to about half of that,” he added.
The Celerio is also touted to have a fuel economy of 23.1 kilometres per litre, in both automatic and manual variants.
The Celerio, with a 998 cc 3 cylinder K-Next engine delivering 68 ps at 6,000 rpm, comes in four petrol variants — the Lxi, Vxi, Zxi and Zxi (optional), with the Lxi and Vxi also coming with Auto Gear Shift options.
