CHENNAI: The Tiago was Tata Motors’ attempt to reinvent its design philosophy and it finally seems to be bearing fruit. The Tiago was one of the few models in the Indian automobile market that has managed to do well in June, breaking into the top 10 models sold in the month and giving competitors like Renault Kwid a run for their money.

With the uncertainty over GST having affected dispatches and sales for many automakers, top selling models like the Kwid, Creta, WagonR, Swift and Alto all saw sales decline year-on-year compared to the same month last year.

However, Tiago, along with the Baleno and Vittara Brezza, saw sales increasing, putting the Tiago just one unit short of the Kwid. Tiago came tenth on the list (5,438), preceded by the Kwid (5,439). The Kwid had come in fifth in June 2016, selling almost double its current sales, at 9,459 units.

“Tata Motors was a very traditional company in terms of design and were very late to catch up. But they seem to be doing so now and that the Tiago, the new boy in the stable, is doing this is significant,” admitted a senior auto industry official, who declined to be named.

However, while the high selling models like the Alto, Creta, WagonR, Swift DZire saw sales decline, they still managed to hold on to their top level spots on the rank list. The Alto (14,856) remained the top selling model in the country, followed by Hyundai’s Grand i10, DZire, WagonR, Baleno, and Swift.

The Tiago, as with the Baleno and Vitarra Brezza, gained from rather long waitlist at dealerships, which prevented the firm from seeing sales figures for the model affected too badly. In fact, the uncertainty over GST and the resultant impact on demand saw most manufacturers in the country struggle with sales. Maruti Suzuki and Honda Cars were two of the few who managed positive sales growth in June, with others like Toyota, Renault and Ford seeing sharp falls in sales of their models, falling as much as 30 per cent for some.
