MUMBAI : In a setback to Reliance Jio Infocomm Ltd, reports emerged on Sunday about a likely data leak on an independent website — magicapk.com. The website allegedly disclosed sensitive subscriber data including customer’s first and last names, mobile numbers, email id, circles, SIM activation dates and even the Aadhaar numbers.

However, the site has been suspended since, while the company denied reports of a data breach.
“We have come across the unverified and unsubstantiated claims of the website and area investigating it. Prima facie, the data appears to be unauthentic. We want to assure our subscribers that their data is safe and maintained with highest security. Data is only shared with authorities as per their requirement. We have informed law enforcement agencies about the claims of the website and will follow through to ensure strict action is taken,” Reliance Jio said in a statement.

The newest telco counts over 100 million subscribers is also one of the first telcos that sought Aadhaar as a mandatory Id proof for customers and any likely breach of data will raise serious concerns over privacy and security.Asked if the recent eposide would prompt Airtel to strengthen its data security and systems, its managing director and chief executive officer (India and South Asia) Gopal Vittal said that data breach was a “real threat” globally, not only for telecom companies but for banks and credit card firms too.
