NEW DELHI: The government on Monday asked industry to immediately respond to the earlier appeal made by the finance minister to revise the maximum retail price (MRP) on all the products where GST rates were reduced by the GST Council.

Vanaja N Sarna, chairperson of the Central Board of Excise & Customs (CBEC), has shot off a letter to all major fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) companies pointing out the need to immediately revise the MRP on their products.

She has also requested the companies to give wide publicity to the revised MRP of products. Charging GST over and above MRP is an offence under various laws of the land.

According to an official in CBEC, complaints have been pouring in from consumers across the country about GST being levied on MRP of products by both online and offline retailers.

After the 23rd GST Council meeting in Guwahati, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had categorically asked the industry to ensure that the new rates be made available to the consumers.
