Puducherry to appoint only Tamil speaking District Collector

PUDUCHERRY: Puducherry Human Resource and Consumer Protection Council (HRCPS) on Wednesday urged the government to appoint an officer with Tamil knowledge as the District Collector in place of Mr Sathyendra Singh Dursawat who was shifted to New Delhi.

HRCPS General secretary Muruganandam in a release said that officers from North India who do not know Tamil Language were appointed as District Collector, Police Chief, Senior Superintendent of police and Superintendent of police.

With the Officials not aware of the local language, ordinary people could not express their grievances.

In fact, the consultation meeting at the Sashun Drugs turned violent as Mr Dursawat, the then District Collector did not know Tamil, Mr Muruganandam claimed.

Hence, officers well versed in Tamil be posted as the District Collector or strict orders has to be issued to them to learn Tamil within three months, he said, adding, that this should be applicable for all posts where the public used to visit often.
