Sensex continues flat trade; ONGC up, RIL down

Indian equities remained flat in post noon trade ahead of F&O expiry on Thursday. Capital goods, consumer durable and power stocks witnessed a rise. At 1.21 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 20.52 points or 0.10% at 21,053.23 with 19 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 14.15 points or 0.23% at 6,282.55 with 34 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

Oil & Natural Gas Corporation contributed rise of 20.47 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I T C (12.41 points), Tata Power Company (6.63 points), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (6.17 points) and Bharti Airtel (5.86 points).

However, Reliance Industries contributed fall of 20.84 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (7.34 points), Hero Motocorp (2.98 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (2.62 points) and Tata Motors (2.24 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Power Company (3.25%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.21%), NTPC (1.31%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.25%), Bharti Airtel (1.14%), and Jindal Steel & Power (1.11%).

On the other hand, Bajaj Auto (1.68%), Hero Motocorp (1.54%), Reliance Industries (1.15%), Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (0.81%), I C I C I Bank (0.44%), and Maruti Suzuki India (0.43%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 1.37% and 2.49% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were CORE Education and Technologies (6.93%), Allcargo Logistics (2.27%), Allahabad Bank (2.04%), Alstom India (1.32%) and Amara Raja Batteries (0.66%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (15.12%), Dr Datsons Labs (2.47%), Aarti Industries (1.79%), Trident (0.92%) and Styrolution ABS (India) (0.68%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Capital Goods index was at 10,329.66, up by 152.42 points or by 1.50%. The major gainers were A B B India (2.89%), BEML (1.81%), Alstom India (1.32%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.64%) and Bharat Electronics (0.64%).

The Consumer Durables index was at 5,807.62, up by 77.39 points or by 1.35%. The major gainers were Gitanjali Gems (12.79%), Bajaj Electricals (5.46%), Blue Star (2.4%), Symphony (0.73%) and Titan Company (0.59%).

The Power index was at 1,700.79, up by 21.60 points or by 1.29%. The major gainers were Adani Power (3.13%), A B B India (2.89%), C E S C (2.65%), Crompton Greaves (0.93%) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.64%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,605 advances against 792 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Wockhardt topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 272.06 million. It was followed by Bosch (Rs. 227.25 million), Aurobindo Pharma (Rs. 195.15 million) and Tata Global Beverages (Rs. 192.10 million).

The volume chart was led by Suzlon Energy with trades of over 5.59 million shares. It was followed by Lanco Infratech (4.22 million), Cals Refineries (3.18 million) and Alok Industries (2.91 million).
