Sensex ends down 216 points; Tata Steel, BHEL fall

Indian equitiessettled sharply lower on Thursday ahead of IIP
data. Metal, banking, consumer durables and auto stocks wereworst
At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex declined
215.57 points or 1.08% at 19,781.88 with 23 components registering
drop. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went down by 54.75
pointsor 0.93% at 5,858.40 with 40 components registering
I C I C I Bank contributed fall of 29.64 points in the Sensex.
It was followed by Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (28.55
points), Reliance Industries (25.51 points), Infosys (24.69 points)
and H D F C Bank (24.53 points).
However, I T C contributed rise of 40.6 points in the Sensex. It
was followed by Housing Development Finance Corporation (8.9
points), Tata Power Company (5.28 points), NTPC (1.86 points).
Major gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Power Company
(2.75%), I T C (1.91%), G A I L (India) (1.60%), Cipla (0.66%),
Housing Development Finance Corporation (0.58%), and NTPC
On the other hand, Tata Steel (4.13%), Bharat Heavy Electricals
(3.99%), Hero Motocorp (3.72%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation
(3.27%), Maruti Suzuki India (3.22%), and Coal India (2.81%) were
the major losers in the Sensex.
Mid & Small-cap Space
The BSE Midcap settled lower -4.88 points or 0.27% at 5,594.41
however the Bse Smallcap gained 0.00 points or 0.00% at 5,477.52 at
the closing.The major losers in the BSE Midcap were Alstom India
(2.55%), Amtek India (1.56%), Amara Raja Batteries (0.71%), Anant
Raj (0.55%) and A B G Shipyard (0.41%).The major gainers in the BSE
Smallcap were Adhunik Metaliks (7.26%), Dr Datsons Labs (6.83%),
A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (3.73%), Styrolution ABS
(India) (1.42%) and Action Construction Equipment (1.37%).
Sectors in Limelight
The Metal index was at 8,417.91, down by 215.11 points or by
2.49%. The major losers were JSW Steel (3.16%), Coal India (2.81%),
Hindalco Industries (2.76%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.04%) and
Hindustan Zinc (0.08%).
The Oil & Gas index was at 8,504.89, down by 173.32 points
or by 2%. The major losers were Oil India (4.18%), Hindustan
Petroleum Corporation (3.76%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation
(2.65%), Castrol India (0.37%) and Cairn India (0.19%).
The Auto index was at 10,838.67, down by 210.1 points or by
1.9%. The major losers were Hero Motocorp (3.72%), Exide Industries
(3.05%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.54%), Bajaj Auto (1.22%) and
Ashok Leyland (0.07%).
Market breadth was negative with 1,193 advances against 1,213
Value and Volume Toppers
Bharat Forge topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover
of Rs. 2,201.89 million. It was followed by Tech Mahindra (Rs.
1,280.03 million), Financial Technologies (India) (Rs. 1,214.82
million) and Axis Bank (Rs. 716.73 million).
The volume chart was led by Jaiprakash Associates with trades of
over 10.90 million shares. It was followed by Bharat Forge (8.54
million), Reliance Power (7.13 million) and IDFC (6.77
