Sensex ends flat; power up, oil & gas down

Indian markets settled on a flat note on Tuesday. Power and capital goods stocks witnessed a rise whereas oil & gas stocks registered a fall.

At the close, the 30-share benchmark index, BSE Sensex ended flat with a decline of 0.27 points at 22,055.21, 15 components posting drop. while the broad based NSE Nifty closed flat with a gain of 6.25 points or 0.09%, at 6,589.75.28 components registering rise.

Sensex Movers

Reliance Industries contributed fall of 54.22 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Infosys (10.43 points), Wipro (7.98 points), Mahindra & Mahindra (6.58 points) and Tata Consultancy Services (3.58 points).

However, Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed rise of 20.65 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Larsen & Toubro (16.29 points), I T C (14.45 points), I C I C I Bank (14.38 points) and Hindustan Unilever (12.26 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Bharat Heavy Electricals (4.41%), Hero Motocorp (3.06%), Jindal Steel & Power (2.36%), Hindustan Unilever (1.73%), Larsen & Toubro (1.47%), and Tata Power Company (1.24%).

On the other hand, Reliance Industries (2.87%), Wipro (2.58%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.17%), Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (1.01%), G A I L (India) (0.90%), and Hindalco Industries (0.70%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.61% and 0.16% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were A B G Shipyard (2.87%), Alstom India (1.67%), Amara Raja Batteries (1.65%), Amtek Auto (1.12%) and Allahabad Bank (0.49%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aegis Logistics (4.55%), Adhunik Metaliks (1.56%), Aarti Industries (1.34%), Styrolution ABS (India) (1.24%) and Dr Datsons Labs (0.74%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Power index was at 1,671.86, up by 31.46 points or by 1.92%. The major gainers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (4.41%), A B B India (3.04%), C E S C (2.79%), Reliance Infrastructure (1.83%) and Adani Power (0.72%).

The Capital Goods index was at 11,735.07, up by 193.12 points or by 1.67%. The major gainers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (4.41%), A B B India (3.04%), Crompton Greaves (2.14%), Alstom India (1.67%) and Bharat Electronics (0.52%).

On the other hand, the Oil & Gas index was at 9,166.70, down by 135.53 points or by 1.46%. The major losers were Reliance Industries (2.87%), Oil India (2.75%), G A I L (India) (0.9%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (0.34%) and Cairn India (0.17%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,247 advances against 1,684 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Reliance Industries topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 492.38 million. It was followed by Tata Steel (Rs. 368.79 million), V I P Industries (Rs. 281.25 million) and Ceat (Rs. 256.29 million).

The volume chart was led by VKS Projects with trades of over 19.54 million shares. It was followed by KSS (6.94 million), V I P Industries (3.08 million) and Jaiprakash Associates (2.63 million).
