Sensex ends mildly higher on F&O expiry; Tata Power, ONGC rally

Indian markets settledmildly higheron Thursdayamid F&O expiry today. Consumer durables, capital goods and power stocks witnessed a rise. At the close, the benchmark 30-share index, BSE Sensex added 41.88 points or 0.20% at 21,074.59 with 12 components posting rise. Meanwhile, the broad based NSE Nifty went up by 9.65 points or 0.15% at 6,278.05 with 22 components registering rise.

Sensex Movers

H D F C Bank contributed rise of 30.47 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (21.47 points), Infosys (12.18 points), Tata Power Company (8.3 points) and I T C (7.45 points).

However, Reliance Industries contributed fall of 17.03 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (6.13 points), Tata Motors (4.48 points), Mahindra & Mahindra (4.14 points) and Hero Motocorp (3.9 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Power Company (4.06%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.31%), H D F C Bank (1.83%), Tata Steel (1.53%), Wipro (1.36%), and Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.33%).

On the other hand, Bajaj Auto (2.02%), Hero Motocorp (2.01%), Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (1.97%), Reliance Industries (0.94%), Mahindra & Mahindra (0.77%), and Tata Motors (0.64%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.94% and 2.20% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were CORE Education and Technologies (6.09%), Allcargo Logistics (3.6%), Allahabad Bank (2.09%), Alstom India (1.56%) and Amara Raja Batteries (0.41%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (17.08%), Adhunik Metaliks (4.99%), Aarti Industries (2.32%), Dr Datsons Labs (2.05%) and Action Construction Equipment (1.8%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Consumer Durables index was at 5,802.30, up by 50.43 points or by 0.88%. The major gainers were Gitanjali Gems (17.06%), Bajaj Electricals (4.79%), Symphony (3.29%), Blue Star (0.82%) and Titan Company (0.79%).

The Capital Goods index was at 10,267.68., up by 23.44 points or by 0.23%. The major gainers were Havell'S India (2.74%), Alstom India (1.56%), A B B India (1.55%), BEML (1.54%) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.33%).

The Power index was at 1,693.32, up by 17.84 points or by 1.06%. The major gainers were Adani Power (3.39%), C E S C (3.23%), G M R Infrastructure (2.09%), A B B India (1.55%) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.33%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,650 advances against 932 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Escorts topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 118.98 million. It was followed by Cox and Kings (Rs. 75.32 million), Opto Circuits (India) (Rs. 70.12 million) and Jaypee Hotels (Rs. 28.46 million).

The volume chart was led by Opto Circuits (India) with trades of over 2.58 million shares. It was followed by Escorts (0.85 million), Cox and Kings (0.69 million) and Jaypee Hotels (0.12 million).
