Sensex falls 58 points; Dr Reddy, Tata Power drag

Indian equities are trading lower on Monday. FMCG and power stocks witnessed a fall whereas metal stocks registered a rise.

At 2.23 p.m., the Sensex was trading down 58.08 points or 0.26% at 22,281.89 with 13 components falling. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading lower by 24.90 points or 0.37% at 6,671.00 with 26 components falling.

Sensex Movers

I T C contributed fall of 45 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (20.34 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (19.31 points), Larsen & Toubro (14.67 points) and Wipro (6 points).

However, Hindalco Industries contributed rise of 12.31 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Mahindra & Mahindra (8.11 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (7.84 points), Tata Steel (7.67 points) and Bharti Airtel (6.62 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Hindalco Industries (7.17%), Jindal Steel & Power (3.97%), Tata Steel (2.73%), Mahindra & Mahindra (1.42%), Hero Motocorp (1.40%), and Bajaj Auto (1.32%).

On the other hand, Dr Reddy'S Laboratories (2.18%), Tata Power Company (1.97%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (1.96%), Wipro (1.92%), I T C (1.88%), and G A I L (India) (1.64%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 0.39% and 0.69% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Aban Offshore (6.7%), Allcargo Logistics (4.63%), Amtek Auto (3.44%), A I A Engineering (2.07%) and Amara Raja Batteries (0.55%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Action Construction Equipment (1.49%), Trident (1.27%), Dr Datsons Labs (1.13%), Aegis Logistics (0.54%) and Adhunik Metaliks (0.11%).

Sectors in Limelight

The FMCG index was at 6,943.90, down by 72.04 points or by 1.03%. The major losers were I T C (1.88%) and United Spirits (0.29%).

The Power index was at 1,719.83, down by 15.16 points or by 0.87%. The major losers were Crompton Greaves (2.13%), C E S C (1.66%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.28%), Reliance Infrastructure (1.01%) and Adani Power (0.1%).

On the other hand, the Metal index was at 9,979.61, up by 295.34 points or by 3.05%. The major gainers were Hindalco Industries (7.17%), JSW Steel (4.81%), Jindal Steel & Power (3.97%), Hindustan Zinc (3.22%) and Coal India (0.21%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,590 advances against 1,072 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

H D F C Bank topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 578.51 million. It was followed by Aban Offshore (Rs. 527.74 million), State Bank Of India (Rs. 479.44 million) and Tata Steel (Rs. 336.82 million).

The volume chart was led by Unitech with trades of over 7.58 million shares. It was followed by Suzlon Energy (4.26 million), Jaiprakash Power Ventures (3.79 million) and L&T Finance Holdings (2.65 million).
