Sensex gains over 230 points; Hindalco, ICICI Bank, BHEL up

Indian equities gained furthermomentumin the post noon trade on Tuesdayafter FIIs were net buyers on Monday.Metal, banking and capital goods stocks witnessed a rise whereas IT stocks registered a fall.

At 2.21 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 233.73 points or 1.12% at 21,180.38 with 25 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 70.10 points or 1.13% at 6,291.55 with 43 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

I C I C I Bank contributed rise of 61.48 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I T C (21.11 points), Larsen & Toubro (20.55 points), Reliance Industries (17.85 points) and Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (17.24 points).

However, Tata Consultancy Services contributed fall of 2.8 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (1.9 points), H D F C Bank (1.76 points), D L F (0.18 points) and Jaiprakash Associates (0.14 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Hindalco Industries (7.01%), I C I C I Bank (3.64%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.71%), G A I L (India) (2.27%), NTPC (2.24%), and Tata Power Company (2.05%).

On the other hand, Bajaj Auto (0.43%), Sun Pharmaceutical Industries (0.38%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.25%), and H D F C Bank (0.11%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps underperformed their larger counterparts gaining 1.10% and 0.98% respectively.The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Allcargo Logistics (4.21%), Aban Offshore (3.2%), Allahabad Bank (2.6%), A I A Engineering (2.13%) and Alstom India (0.37%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Action Construction Equipment (2.52%), Styrolution ABS (India) (2.35%), Trident (1.96%), Dr Datsons Labs (1.84%) and Aarti Industries (0.45%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Metal index was at 8,893.92, up by 245.91 points or by 2.84%. The major gainers were Hindalco Industries (7.01%), Hindustan Zinc (4.19%), Jindal Steel & Power (1.67%), Coal India (1.27%) and Bhushan Steel (0.3%).

The Bankex index was at 12,424.14, up by 243.47 points or by 2.00%. The major gainers were Bank Of Baroda(4.59%), I C I C I Bank (3.64%), Bank Of India (3.47%), Canara Bank (2.7%) and Federal Bank (0.38%).

The Capital Goods index was at 10,472.49, up by 204.50 points or by 1.99%. The major gainers were Bharat Heavy Electricals (2.71%), A I A Engineering (2.13%), A B B India (1.51%), Alstom India (0.37%) and BEML (0.02%).

On the other hand, the IT index was at 9,652.10, down by 17.62 points or by 0.18%. The major losers were H C L Technologies (1.74%), Tech Mahindra (0.8%), Oracle Financial Services Software (0.32%) and Tata Consultancy Services (0.25%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was negative with 1,502 advances against 1,112 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Reliance Communications topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 816 million. It was followed by Tata Elxsi (Rs. 712.92 million), Astrazeneca Pharma India (Rs. 267.85 million) and Tata Sponge Iron (Rs. 245.06 million).

The volume chart was led by Reliance Communications with trades of over 7.29 million shares. It was followed by Southern Petrochemical Industries Corporation (2.90 million), Sintex Industries (2.25 million) and I V R C L (1.97 million).
