Sensex remains flat; Hindalco, SBI, Tata Power lead

Indian equities bounced back into the positive terrain and istrading slightly higher on Friday. Power and realty stocks witnessed a rise whereas FMCG stocks registered a fall.

At 2.30 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 28.20 points or 0.13% at 22,242.57 with 16 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 22.80 points or 0.34% at 6,664.55 with 34 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

Reliance Industries contributed rise of 26.2 points in the Sensex. It was followed by State Bank Of India (24.4 points), Bharti Airtel (9.91 points), NTPC (9.67 points) and Grasim Industries (8.97 points).

However, Housing Development Finance Corporation contributed fall of 25.8 points in the Sensex. It was followed by H D F C Bank (16.68 points), I T C (16.26 points), I C I C I Bank (5.64 points) and Larsen & Toubro (5.52 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Hindalco Industries (3.51%), Tata Power Company (2.96%), State Bank Of India (2.89%), NTPC (2.35%), Bharti Airtel (1.82%), and Coal India (1.59%).

On the other hand, Housing Development Finance Corporation (1.49%), H D F C Bank (0.95%), Jindal Steel & Power (0.82%), Hindustan Unilever (0.77%), I T C (0.68%), and Larsen & Toubro (0.49%) were the major losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 1.34% and 1.11% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were A B G Shipyard (4.52%), Alstom India (2.35%), A I A Engineering (1.36%), Aban Offshore (0.99%) and CORE Education and Technologies (0.65%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (9.98%), Trident (1.77%), Action Construction Equipment (1.57%), Adhunik Metaliks (1.13%) and Styrolution ABS (India) (0.63%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Power index was at 1,720.89, up by 36.74 points or by 2.18%. The major gainers were Adani Power (13.73%), C E S C (5.27%), Reliance Infrastructure (3.1%), Crompton Greaves (0.22%) and Bharat Heavy Electricals (0.18%).

The Realty index was at 1,431.02, up by 25.72 points or by 1.83%. The major gainers were Indiabulls Real Estate (6.36%), Anant Raj (4.75%), Godrej Properties (3.84%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (2.14%) and D L F (0.97%).

The PSU index was at 6,342.24, up by 113.57 points or by 1.82%. The major gainers were Bank Of India(6.28%), Allahabad Bank (5.13%), Andhra Bank (3.98%), Bank Of Baroda (3.89%) and Bank Of Maharashtra (2.24%).

On the other hand, the FMCG index was at 6,984.66, down by 13.29 points or by 0.19%. The major losers were Hindustan Unilever (0.77%), I T C (0.68%) and United Spirits (0.03%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,628 advances against 1,116 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Cholamandalam Investment and Finance Company topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 881.65 million. It was followed by State Bank Of India (Rs. 507.35 million), United Spirits (Rs. 412.14 million) and Reliance Industries (Rs. 352.66 million).

The volume chart was led by Usha Martin with trades of over 4.12 million shares. It was followed by Jaiprakash Associates (3.55 million), V I P Industries (3.31 million) and Adani Power (3.13 million).
