Sensex surges 116 points; BHEL, Hindalco, JSPL rise

Indian equities are trading higher in post noon trade on Thursday. Realty and power stocks witnessed a gain whereas FMCG stocks registered a fall.

At 1.23 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 115.80 points or 0.54% at 21,392.66 with 22 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 39.20 points or 0.62% at 6,367.85 with 42 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

Reliance Industries contributed rise of 22.95 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I C I C I Bank (21.24 points), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (20.11 points), Housing Development Finance Corporation (13.39 points) and Reliance Infrastructure (11.34 points).

However, I T C contributed fall of 12.42 points in the Sensex. It was followed by Tata Consultancy Services (4.74 points), Tata Motors (4.65 points), Hindustan Unilever (2.37 points) and Wipro (1.52 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.84%), Hindalco Industries (3.12%), Jindal Steel & Power (3.09%), Oil & Natural Gas Corporation (2.13%), Hero Motocorp (2%), and G A I L (India) (1.72%).

On the other hand, Cipla (0.83%), Tata Motors (0.66%), I T C (0.54%), Wipro (0.51%), Tata Consultancy Services (0.42%), and Hindustan Unilever (0.34%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 1.23% and 1.31% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Alstom India (4.69%), A B G Shipyard (0.99%), Aban Offshore (0.55%), CORE Education and Technologies (0.43%) and A I A Engineering (0.17%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Styrolution ABS (India) (5.95%), Dr Datsons Labs (5.18%), Aarti Industries (1.77%), A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (1.58%) and Trident (0.93%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 1,281.79, up by 42.56 points or by 3.43%. The major gainers were Indiabulls Real Estate (4.46%), D L F (4.39%), Godrej Properties (4.21%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (4.14%) and Anant Raj (0.87%).

The Power index was at 1,579.42, up by 35.02 points or by 2.27%. The major gainers were Reliance Infrastructure (9.82%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (3.84%), C E S C (2.94%), A B B India (1.64%) and Adani Power (0.95%).

On the other hand, the FMCG index was at 6,532.73, down by 14.19 points or by 0.22%. The major losers were I T C (0.54%), Hindustan Unilever (0.34%), Godrej Consumer Products (0.22%) and Dabur India (0.03%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,606 advances against 968 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Tata Elxsi topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 368.91 million. It was followed by Just Dial (Rs. 303.01 million), Reliance Infrastructure (Rs. 291.46 million) and Reliance Industrial Infrastructure (Rs. 289.24 million).

The volume chart was led by Birla Cotsyn (India) with trades of over 9.53 million shares. It was followed by Spicejet (3.33 million), Unitech (2.34 million) and JM Financial (2.17 million).
