Sensex surges 240 points; realty, auto, capital goods rise

Indian equities gained groundin the post noon trade on Thursday led by sharp gains seen inrealty, auto, capital goods and oil & gas stocks.

At 1.33 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 240.68 points or 1.08% at 22,517.91 with 26 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 60.35 points or 0.90% at 6,735.65 with 46 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

I C I C I Bank contributed rise of 50.28 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I T C (32.16 points), Reliance Industries (27.58 points), Tata Motors (24.31 points) and State Bank Of India (19.14 points).

However, H D F C Bank contributed fall of 27.07 points in the Sensex. It was followed by NTPC (3.23 points),Grasim Industries (1.28 points) and D L F (1.32 points).

Biggest gainers in the 30-share index were Tata Motors (3.27%), Jindal Steel & Power (3.10%), Wipro (2.82%), I C I C I Bank (2.80%), State Bank Of India (2.24%), and Tata Power Company (2.15%).

On the other hand, H D F C Bank (1.52%), NTPC (0.77%), and Coal India (0.31%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Mid & Small-cap Space

The BSE Mid and small caps outperformed their larger counterparts gaining 1.15% and 1.18% respectively. The major gainers in the BSE Midcap were Alstom India (3.52%), Allahabad Bank (2.89%), Aban Offshore (2.51%), CORE Education and Technologies (1.46%) and Amara Raja Batteries (0.23%).The major gainers in the BSE Smallcap were Aarti Industries (2.28%), Trident (1.69%), Styrolution ABS (India) (0.97%), Action Construction Equipment (0.65%) and A2Z Maintenance & Engineering Services (0.09%).

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 1,484.64, up by 32.39 points or by 2.23%. The major gainers were Housing Development and Infrastructure (4.52%), Indiabulls Real Estate (4.5%), Anant Raj (3.4%), Godrej Properties (2.48%) and D L F (1.01%).

The Auto index was at 13,431.67, up by 234.37 points or by 1.78%. The major gainers were Hero Motocorp (1.8%), Exide Industries (1.29%), Bajaj Auto (0.73%), Cummins India (0.46%) and Bharat Forge (0.38%).

The Capital Goods index was at 12,039.27, up by 153.24 points or by 1.29%. The major gainers were Alstom India (3.52%), Crompton Greaves (3.39%), A B B India (1.72%), Bharat Heavy Electricals (1.14%) and BEML (0.55%).

The Oil & Gas index was at 9,653.03, up by 109.91 points or by 1.15%. The major gainers were Cairn India (2.15%), Bharat Petroleum Corporation (2.01%), G A I L (India) (1.58%), Hindustan Petroleum Corporation (1.49%) and Castrol India (0.8%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,540 advances against 1,042 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Bayer CropScience topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 2,790.23 million. It was followed by Kotak Mahindra Bank (Rs. 654.31 million), Tata Consultancy Services (Rs. 524.04 million) and Adani Enterprises (Rs. 522.46 million).

The volume chart was led by Kingfisher Airlines with trades of over 3.67 million shares. It was followed by Unitech (2.85 million), Suzlon Energy (2.72 million) and Birla Power Solutions (2.56 million).
