Sensex surges over 300 points; Hindalco, Tata Motors lead

Indian equities continued to trade higher on Thursday. Realty, auto, banking and capital goods stocks witnessed a gain.

At 2.25 p.m., the Sensex was trading up 323.07 points or 1.45% at 22,600.30 with 26 components gaining. Meanwhile, the Nifty was trading higher by 89.50 points or 1.34% at 6,764.80 with 45 components gaining.

Sensex Movers

I C I C I Bank contributed rise of 65.95 points in the Sensex. It was followed by I T C (49.12 points), Reliance Industries (31.8 points), Tata Motors (29.11 points) and State Bank Of India (25.42 points).

However, H D F C Bank contributed fall of 18.44 points in the Sensex. It was followed by NTPC (0.51 points),Reliance Communications (1.44 points) and Grasim Industries (1.47 points).

Major gainers in the 30-share index were Hindalco Industries (4.47%), Tata Motors (3.90%), I C I C I Bank (3.66%), Jindal Steel & Power (3.19%), State Bank Of India (2.97%), and Tata Power Company (2.58%).

On the other hand, H D F C Bank (1.03%), NTPC (0.12%), and Coal India (0.07%) were the biggest losers in the Sensex.

Sectors in Limelight

The Realty index was at 1,492.66, up by 40.41 points or by 2.78%. The major gainers were Godrej Properties (5.52%), Housing Development and Infrastructure (4.8%), Indiabulls Real Estate (4.41%), Anant Raj (2.71%) and D L F (1.14%).

The Auto index was at 13,481.39, up by 284.09 points or by 2.15%. The major gainers were Hero Motocorp (2.16%), Ashok Leyland (1.54%), Bharat Forge (1.12%), Exide Industries (1.08%) and Bajaj Auto (0.86%).

The Bankex index was at 14,630.23, up by 260.01 points or by 1.81%. The major gainers were Federal Bank (3.79%), I C I C I Bank (3.66%), Canara Bank (2.99%), Bank Of India (1.94%) and Bank Of Baroda (1.62%).

The Capital Goods index was at 12,068.66, up by 182.63 points or by 1.54%. The major gainers were Alstom India (4.26%), A B B India (1.49%), Bharat Electronics (0.42%), BEML (0.41%) and A I A Engineering (0.18%).

Market Breadth

Market breadth was positive with 1,609 advances against 1,066 declines.

Value and Volume Toppers

Bayer CropScience topped the value chart on the BSE with a turnover of Rs. 2,798.83 million. It was followed by Kotak Mahindra Bank (Rs. 667.54 million), Adani Enterprises (Rs. 630.80 million) and Tata Consultancy Services (Rs. 563.23 million).

The volume chart was led by Kingfisher Airlines with trades of over 4.26 million shares. It was followed by Birla Cotsyn (India) (4.24 million), Unitech (4.23 million) and Suzlon Energy (3.04 million).
