Ending months of speculation, Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) chairperson Nandan Nilekani on Friday announced his desire to contest the Lok Sabha elections on a Congress ticket.

Speaking to reporters after addressing students at Christ University, Nilekani said his decision to go with the Congress was based on his experience as UIDAI chairperson. “If I am given a ticket, I will contest,” he said.

The 58-year old co-founder of Infosys, who joined the UIDAI in 2009, had fuelled speculation about his political plans when he met senior Congress leaders a couple of times.

The talk in political circles is that Nilekani will contest from Bangalore South, but he said the constituency was up to the Congress. “For now, I have only expressed my interest to contest,” he said. Expounding on his political vision, Nilekani said he was keen on becoming an ambassador for Bangalore both nationally and internationally.

“I want to help raise money for different organisations - from the government and global institutions - and bring in systemic reforms in the city,” he said.

He remarked he had contributed to Bangalore in many ways, making it a global brand and building the technology industry.

To a question, Nilekani defended his decision to contest from the Congress, a party facing charges of corruption at the Centre.

Nilekani’s former Infosys colleague V Balakrishnan recently joined the Aam Aadmi Party. On Friday, he announced the launch of IdeasforBengaluru - an online platform for Bangaloreans.
