With 33 villages facing drinking water problems and a crisis staring at the other villages in Bangalore Rural district in summer, District In-charge and Agriculture Minister Krishna Byre Gowda said his department has submitted a proposal to the state government seeking a contingency fund of `20 crore to address the issue in municipal and gram panchayat limits.

He was speaking to reporters after the trimester meeting to review developments in the four taluks of Bangalore Rural district at the Zilla Panchayat Office here on Saturday. He said, “The Department has already received `4.3 crore from the Union government under Calamity Relief Fund for providing drinking water to these villages. Borewells were dug and the funds have been used to fix pumps, motors and for their maintenance. An additional `20 crore has been sought from state government as a contingency plan”.

The minister, who pointed out that the district is dependent on water tankers, said, “In long run, we need projects like Ettinahole. Reports suggest that about 24 tmcft of water can be drawn from it and this will help the Bangalore Rural district greatly”.

Gowda said the district administration was able to recover 120 acres of encroached land in Devanahalli, Nelamangala, Hoskote, and Doddballapur taluks. “An action plan has been prepared to identify encroachments and evict encroachers.”
