Impact of Schedule H drugs and Schedule X drugs

The Scheduled H Drug and Schedule X drugs are the ‘restrictive drugs’ which are covered under the Drugs and Cosmetic Act and Rules. The list of  Schedule X drugs includes over 536 drugs.

The Schedule X drugs includes Narcotic and Psychotropic drugs which causes delusion, hallucination, psychosis, sedation and hypnosis.

These drugs should be sold only on the prescription of a registered medication practitioner only.

Studies reveal that chances of drug abuse and addiction are higher with the Schedule X category.

When we asked Kamini Rao, gynecologist at the Bangalore Assisted Conception Centre, she said that, “Consumption of narcotic drugs can effect the central nervous system which can also have a profound effect on brain.

As it also reaches the blood vessels, the addiction can also lead to HIV AIDS.” Speaking about the impact on these drugs on the pregnant women, she said that babies may die within one month if the mother is addicted to the narcotic drugs.

She added, “The growth of the foetus would be restricted. Consumption of these restricted drugs in large volume may also lead to the mental retardation of the new born. The baby may also develop hypertension at a very young age.”

Look out for signs

Although there are certain emotional and physical symptoms of substance abuse, do not immediately assume that your child is on drugs-there could be other reasons why your child behaves unusually.
