BMTC drivers under the lens

After anoutburst by a citizen against drivers of Bangalore Metropolitan TransportCorporation (BMTC) on the Facebook page of Bangalore Traffic Police (BTP), thepolice have launched a drive against BMTC buses from Tuesday.
A post by a citizen on the BTP Facebookpage on how he was threatened by three BMTC bus drivers who surrounded him withthe help of three buses has caught the attention of the BTP who announced thatthere would be a drive against BMTC buses and government vehicles.
According to statistics available onthe BTP website, the BTP has raised 82,036 violations against buses till Octoberwhich forms only 1.
9 per cent of their total violations recorded.
However it is the method of bookingviolations by the BMTC drivers that has been the bone of contention between theBMTC and the BTP for quite sometime.
BMTC officials had earlier this yearalleged that the BTP was not sending them updates on offenders and as a result, they were unable to collect fines from the drivers.
While it is the job of the BTP tocollect fine, a special arrangement prevails in case of the BMTC buses in whichthe details are recorded and forwarded to the BMTC.
In the midst of all this confusion andin spite of the various training programmes that the drivers are made to undergo, they continue to remain the most frequent rule breakers leading to many trafficsnarls, accidents and deaths in many cases.
With the traffic police having put theBMTC in its cross hairs, even the corporation officials seem to have realised theurgency of imparting driving manners to its staff.
“We are having talks with the policeabout this issue, we will be implementing new programmes shortly in order toimprove the staff behaviour.
The BMTC along with the BTP will workon a system to streamline the booking of traffic violations by our drivers,”said Anjum Parvez, MD of BMTC.
