As many as 126 companies, including 35 new entrants, have offered summer internships at the Indian Institute of Management- Bangalore (IIM-B).
In all, 377 students from the 2012- 14 batch were offered placements.
Five students with more than two years’ of work experience opted out of summer internship to pursue other opportunities and the IIM-B Summer Internship process was completed in eight slots spread over four days.
According to Professor Sankarshan Basu, Chairperson, Office of Career Development Services, IIM-B, “This year, there has been an increased demand for our students across sectors.
A number of first-time companies, most of whom were from the oil and gas, real estate, media and education sectors have offered internships.
Students were recruited for positions all over India and 35 are expected to intern abroad.
” While the financial services segment absorbed around 27 per cent of all students, 22 per cent of acceptances were in the management consulting sector.
Sales and marketing accounted for 25 per cent of the batch, IT for 12 per cent, operations 7 per cent and offers in general management or leadership areas were about seven per cent.
First-time companies on campus included Facebook, Accel Partners, Catamaran Ventures, Merck, Ebay, GE, Sony, Shell, Dupont and Uninor.
“This year’s summer placements saw 265 offers being made in the first two days.
Sales and marketing emerged as one of the preferred sectors among students, with media and telecom firms offering roles in sales and marketing for the first time like other FMCG firms,” said Ashvek Ambe, a PG student member of the Placement Committee.
Major recruiters at the institute were The Blackstone Group, Goldman Sachs, The Royal Bank of Scotland Group, JP Morgan, Deutsche Bank and HSBC.
Some of the other banks that recruited from IIM-B this year include Bank of America-Merrill Lynch, Barclays Capital, Citigroup, Nomura, Rothschild, Standard Chartered, Edelweiss, among other firms.
