‘My mother was my inspiration’

‘My mother was my inspiration’

It was my childhood dream to be an artist like my mother who plays the veena. I started learning classical music and dance at the age of eight. Both music and dance are an integral part of my life. The regular practice and concentration especially in the morning times has helped me to complete my various chores successfully”.

Srilatha, a versatile artiste and an ardent disciple of Bharathanatyam, Carnatic music and Veena has carved a name for herself in the world of classical arts. Being trained by eminent Gurus, she has taken these art forms as her vocation and passion.

A person with just nobility, gallantry and pride cannot achieve much in her life. It is only with veritable learning, I have been able to achieve mastery in the world of music and dance”, said Srilatha.

She has received more than 200 prizes from Bangalore and outside and honored by many esteemed Sabhas including Bangalore Gayana Samaj, Kalamandir (Mysore), Narada Gana Sabha (Chennai), Madras Academy and a host of other academies.

“Apart from my mother, all my teachers have encouraged and supported me a lot” She says. Srilatha is not only talented but also a recipient of many State Government scholarships, awards, titles, felicitations, prizes in various competitions at inter-school, inter-collegiate and also state and national level competitions.

Recollecting a memorable performance of her life, she explains, “Arangetram was one of my most memorable performances in front of a large gathering. The cheers and appreciation made me feel very happy”. Continuing in the same vein, she reveals, “I receive both positive and negative comments. But the negative criticism has helped me a lot to improve my performance.”

Over a period of time, Srilatha has participated in several workshops conducted by eminent artists like T R Subramaniam, Tulasi Ramachandra, Dr Nandakumar and Mala Shashikant. After several solo, duet and group performances, she has been recognized at both state and national levels being selected for Nava Pallava programme of AIR, along with release of her CDs. “I was very excited when I presented Ragam-Tanam-Pallavi in the presence of Chitraveena exponent Vidwan Ravikiran during Nadhasurabhi awards function”, recalls this talented girl.

Apart from this, she is also interested in drawing, painting and sports. So what’s the future for this young creative artiste? “My aspiration is to become a renowned musician and dancer and impart this knowledge to the coming generation,” she signs off.
