‘India and China have the right to grow’

Niu Qingbao, Consul General of the People’s Republic of China, on Monday said that developing countries like India and China have every right to the planet’s resources as those of other developed countries like the USA and Europe.

“The Chinese and Indians will not give up our right to develop. But we (China) do use our resources wisely and encourage environmentally friendly measures like renewable energy. We have realised the importance of developing sustainably,” Qingbao said.

He was speaking at the inauguration of an exhibition of photographs from China on Monday.

Speaking about development models, he gave the example of the autonomous region of Tibet. “The region was a theocracy in 1951 with a life expectancy of 35 years. Now it is developed and the life expectancy has increased to 70 years,” he said.
