Walk to create awareness on crimes against women

Nine months ago, a paramedical student was brutally raped in Delhi. There were massive protests across the nation. “We want to remind people of the protests, of crime against women and keep the issue alive,” said Anish Kirolikar, a student of NMiMS (Narsee Monjee Institute of Management Studies).

Over 200 students of the Institute participated in a walkathon organised by the institute in collaboration with Vidyaranya, an NGO, to raise awareness on crimes against women. The students do not think that the walkathon will put a dramatic end to violence against women, but education is important. “Girls need to be educated about their rights. Instead of justifying crimes against themselves and blaming themselves, we need to stand up and talk about it,” said Manvi Sehgal.

“Boys need to be educated too-to respect women and understand that a woman is an equal, not an object on whom they can do whatever they want,” she said. The walkathon ended with a street play by the students. In an effort to support the NGO, students also raised funds through the event.
