Suicide over debt, harassment

Unable to repay the debt incurred by his son, a clerk of the Religious Endowment Department committed suicide by hanging at the office on the fourth floor of VV Towers.

The deceased has been identified as Changalaraya Reddy (58), a native of Andhra Pradesh. He was staying in the department office and committed suicide on Tuesday night. The incident came to light when the staff came to office on Wednesday, said police.

Reddy came to Bangalore 10 years ago while his wife and two sons stay in Tirupati. One of his sons had taken money from his friends and left home. Hence, the responsibility of clearing the debt went to Reddy. Money lenders used to reportedly call him frequently and ask for the money due to which he started consuming alcohol. He called one of his family members on Tuesday and said that he is taking his life, but since he was known to be an alcoholic, the relative did not take him seriously, police said. Cubbon Park Police have registered a case.
