Five members of a family, including two children, sustained severe burns when an LPG cylinder exploded at their house at Kenchanahalli in Rajarajeshwari Nagar on Mysore Road in the wee hours of Tuesday.

The injured were identified as Mahantesh (33), a gardener, his wife Sumabai (28), their children Harshith (3) and Monika (4) and Sumabai’s brother Gajendra (32), a government school teacher. They were shifted to a private hospital with Gajendra reported to be in a critical condition.

The family, who were natives of Chitradurga district, were living in a rented house at  Kenchanahalli 7th Cross.

Police suspect that a leak in the cylinder led to gas spreading in the kitchen. The explosion occurred around 3.55 am when power was restored in the house after an outage. The force of the explosion also damaged the walls of the house and other household articles. Rajarajeshwari Nagar police are investigating.
