Government School Boy's Project Makes it to National Science Exhibition
A government higher secondary school boy brought laurels to Tiruchy district as his science project model, ‘Non Violent Mosquito Coil and Cone’ has been selected for the national level INSPIRE science exhibition. Another boy from a government aided school has been selected for a southern level science exhibition.
M Kumaresan (13) a Class 8 student of Government Higher Secondary School, C Ayyampalayam near Lalgudi, will display his science model at the INSPIRE science exhibition scheduled to be held in New Delhi in January 2014.
The student’s model, designed with the guidance of T Dhanalakshmi, science teacher of the school, was declared the best at the State -level science exhibition held at Tambaram in Kanchee-puram district between December 5 and 7.
Speaking to Express Kumaresan said that as the name suggests, the mosquito coil or cone would not kill the insect, only stun it while the smoke from the herbal ingredients would kill its breeding capacity.
As the coil will be made from available herbs such as castor seed, Vitex negundo, Adhatoda vasica, neem leaf and seed, Solanum trilobatum, tulsi, acorus, oleander band and sawdust, the smoke will also help cure respiratory disorders, said Dhanalakshmi.
The coil can be converted to a liquid repellent by steaming the paste with the help of a rice cooker, she said.
G S Adrin Prakash (13), a Class 7 student of St Antony Higher Secondary School, Manjampatti near Manapparai has been selected for the South India level science exhibition which will be held in Chennai on January 21.
He showcased his model on ‘Saving Power - Power Production’ under the topic Energy. He was guided by his teacher S Arulananthasamy.
