GOSICON, a two-day national conference of the Geriatric Orthopedic Society of India (GOSI), began at the Century Club here on Saturday.

Dr John Ebnezar, founder of GOSI, explained that the society’s aim was to train orthopedic surgeons to meet challenges faced in dealing with elderly patients. These included associated multiple co-morbidities, co-musculoskeletal conditions and psychological problems. GOSI also hopes to liaise with insurance companies in a bid to raise the maximum age limit for coverage.

“The government needs to do more for senior citizens as they do not get any insurance coverage after the age of 70. The government should pitch in for a special insurance scheme for the elderly to lead a dignified life,” Dr Ebnezar added.
