A 22-year-old man, working as a driver of a water tanker, was allegedly murdered by a gang of robbers when he refused to give them his mobile phone and money.

The incident took place at Basaveshwara Layout near the railway track in Nagashettyhalli in Sanjaynagar. The victim Kamal Shafi, a native of Kerala, was attacked on Sunday night and succumbed at a hospital on Monday.

Police sources said Shafi, a resident of Basaveshwara Layout, was walking home  around 9.30 pm on Sunday and was waylaid by a gang of four while he was crossing the railway track close to his house.

When Shafi tried to escape, the gang allegedly smashed his head with a stone after stabbing him with a knife and fleeing the scene.

An injured Shafi managed to reach his house from where his friends immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital.

It is said that Shafi had been earlier involved in a two-wheeler theft reported at Jalahalli police station and had spent some time at the central prison.

Sanjaynagar police have registered a case of murder and are on the lookout for the gang.
