Young paddler Archana Kamat has been on a title roll this year. The talented Malleswaram Association player has made it a habit to win double and treble titles at tournaments across the state.
Recently, Archana bagged the sub junior, junior and youth girls titles. But the youngster lost in the semi-finals of the women's event losing to the more experienced M V Spoorthi.
More importantly, Archana has proved to be a notch or two above the rest in younger company and is getting ready to take the plunge and make waves even in senior company. Senior paddlers better watch out, Archana is on the prowl.
Archana was in the state team for the 74th cadet and sub-junior National and inter-State table tennis championship at Gandhidham (Gujarat) in January this year. Richer by the experience, Archana defeated Aishwarya R Bidri in the Malleswaram Association's state ranking table tennis tourney.
Archana won three titles and in the bargain won handsome prize money at the 2nd Karnataka state ranking table tennis tournament in June at Kushalnagar.
Archana went on to bag a double in the Canara Union state-ranking table tennis tournament at the Prakash courts. Archana defeated Raksha Ramkumar for the junior girls’ title and then got the better of Aishwarya R Bidri for the youth girls’ crown.
Now comes another treble at the Rail Club in the state ranking event. There has hardly been a player who has been as consistent as Archana in claiming more than two trophies. In fact, her trophy cabinet will perhaps have to be expanded to accommodate more as they keep coming in.
An attacking player who is good on both flanks, Archana has a lot of power and accuracy in her forehand shots.
She is adept at playing the waiting game and then moving in for the kill at opportunities to keep her score moving.
Archana is just waiting to explode on the national scene and that is bound to happen soon.
