Accidental fire broke out at a sofa godown at Doddamavalli near Minerva Circle, Lalbagh West Gate on Thursday afternoon. Goods worth a few lakhs were destroyed in the fire.

According to fire department officials, the fire broke out around 12.30 pm. The owner of the neighbouring building noticed thick smoke from the godown on the first floor and informed the fire department. However, fire had spread and destroyed sofa sheets, sponge and other raw material used to manufacture sofas. Five fire tenders were pressed into service and after an operation of nearly four-and-a-half hours, the fire was completely doused.

The police said that no one was in the godown as the workers had gone out for some other work and the building belongs to one Pramodkumar Golecha. It neither had fire-fighting equipment nor No-Objection Certificate from the department.

“Electrical short circuit is suspected to have caused the fire and the total loss suffered due to the fire is yet to be ascertained,” the officials added.
