In a shocking incident, an 18-year-old youth was seriously injured when he was stabbed by a gang of five people in full public view after he tried to settle a fight between two groups playing cricket at a ground near West of Chord Road here on Sunday evening.

Santosh R, who hails from Ulsoor, stayed with his grandmother near Modi Hospital junction.

According to police, Santosh was standing near a cyber cafe after playing cricket at the ANS Ground when he saw members of two cricket teams quarrelling. When he tried to intervene, five people attacked him and chased him up to the Kadamba Hotel premises. They tried to barge into the hotel where a bleeding Santosh attempted to take refuge. However, they were stopped by hotel guards even as a doctor attended to Santosh.

Santosh was rushed to a hospital with serious head injuries. A police official said identification of the attackers was difficult as Santosh only knew their nicknames, having seen them play at the ground. Police suspect the involvement of members of local criminal gangs in the incident.

Woman Hit by Car, Dies

A 45-year-old housewife was killed when she was hit by a car driven by a youth at Hongasandra 5th Cross in Madiwala on Monday. Police officials said the 18-year-old car driver did not possess a driving license.

The deceased, Manjula, was the wife of a Bangalore Electricity Supply Company Limited contractor and had three children. According to police, she was going to a shop near her home when she was hit by the Indica car driven by Lakshman Murthy. Murthy, who worked at the Lakshmi Sagar Restaurant, owned by his brother Gangadhar, had taken the latter’s car for a leisure ride.

Murthy was arrested immediately after the incident. Madiwala Traffic police registered a case against him under section 304 of the IPC (culpable homicide not amounting to murder).
