CHENNAI: On Wednesday 999 children dressed as little Krishnas marched in a rally to highlight the need to conserve water, at Velammal Gardens.

The little Krishnas marched from Vinai Theertha Vinayagar temple in T S Krishna Nagar, Mogappair to Velammal School holding placards that read ‘Water is wealth, it is time to save’ and ‘Let’s save the earth and conserve water for we may have nothing tomorrow’. The rally was organised by Velammal Matriculation Higher Secondary School on the occasion of Krishna Jayanti.

The rally was flagged off by K Veera Raghava Rao, District Collector, Tiruvallur. Addressing the children he said, “There are 40 lakh people in Tiruvallur, if one person plants two saplings we can have 80 lakh plants, which will help in conserving water. Children like you have set a good example to others by taking up such an initiative.”

Congratulating the children on their initiative, he urged the children to insist on their parents using water saving measures in their houses, and to help implement Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa’s initiatives to conserve water in the district.

Marching with the children, M Muthuraj, assistant headmaster of the school, said, “The children are mainly from Class 3 to Class 5. The march is organised on the occasion of Krishna Jayanti to create awareness among the public on the importance of water conservation.”
