The BJP-led Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) is in a hurry to present the budget for the next financial year before the announcement of the model code of conduct for the Lok Sabha election.
According to the election code, the government cannot take up any development work or present the budget 45 days prior to the election.
Since BJP took charge at the BBMP in 2010, the budgets were presented between June and August.
“We have instructed the Taxation and Finance Committee and the budget will be presented in February,” Mayor B S Sathyanarayana told Express.
Dr M S Shivaprasad, Chairman, Taxation and Finance Committee, said they are planning to present the budget in the first or second week of February. However, Shivaprasad was skeptical and said it depends on how soon officials send drafts of the budget of their respective departments.
Jayanagar MLA B N Vijaykumar said a meeting of party councillors will be convened. “They will be asked to present a pro-people budget that is within the BBMP’s capacity,” he added.
