Police are gearing up to check ATM kiosks in the city from Monday as the 45-day deadline to install alarm systems and CCTV cameras expired on Sunday.
After a horrific incident in which a bank manager was attacked in broad daylight inside an ATM, the police are taking no chances.
City Police Commissioner Raghavendra H Auradkar had set a deadline for banks to install alarm systems and CCTV cameras on November 28.
In order to show that they meant business, the police shut down over 1,000 ATMs immediately in the days following the attack. However, in the past one month, unguarded ATMs are making a comeback.
“From Monday we will begin making a survey of all ATMs in the city. Those which are not in compliance with the order will not be allowed to function,” said Kamal Pant, Additional Commissioner of Police, Law and Order.
Banks had earlier asked for exemptions from posting guards for ATMs located in guarded areas like railway stations, bus stands and commercial complexes.
The ATM attack has prompted banks to look at the entire commercial viability of ATMs.
