In a special drive, Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) authorities on Saturday closed 407 shops in Gandhi Nagar for not obtaining trade licence. Later, the shop owners applied for trade licences with the BBMP officials on the spot.
The shops are located in Burma Bazaar, Hong Kong Bazaar, Mahaveer Plaza, Bangkok Bazaar, Sukh Sagar Complex, National Market and other surrounding commercial buildings. Speaking to Express, BBMP joint commissioner (health) Dr K T Yatish Kumar said, “It was a surprise raid. While these shopkeepers have been doing business for the past two decades, many of them did not have trade licences. We raided the area on Saturday morning and sealed those shops. We did not send any prior notice as they were illegal shops.”
Kumar further said the shopkeepers in the commercial buildings did not resist, but instead applied for fresh trade licences.
“Our officials collected `4.56 lakh by issuing application forms to these shopkeepers. After getting trade licence from the BBMP, they can reopen their shops,” he added.
“The BBMP officials will conduct similar raids at Assembly constituency level,” he said.
