BANGALORE: This year’s theatre festival organised by Ranga Shankara between October 28 and November 9 will also mark the well known theatre’s 10th anniversary.

At a press conference on Sunday, Arundhati Nag, Sanket Trust’s managing trustee, said the events to be held on November 9, actor Shankar Nag’s birth anniversary, will be dedicated to him.

The theatre extravaganza will see 20 of 13 plays in nine languages and will include the annual art appreciation course conducted by art critic Sadanand Menon.

Tickets will be available from Monday, Arundhati said.

“We also plan to institute an award in Shankar’s name,” she added.

Lexicographer G Venkatasubbaiah said he hopes that youth writers would take inspiration from other language plays that Ranga Shankara has brought to the city.

“I will say this bravely in front of (Girish) Karnad. Kannada theatre has good actors and directors, but we need more people to write,” he said.

“Even if they (youth) translate them, it would suffice,” he said.

Chairperson of the trust Girish Karnad  said he was amazed that the theatre had completed a decade.

“I never imagined I’d see this day. Even when Aru told me that she was planning to set it up, I didn’t believe it would happen until the day it was inaugurated. And I must congratulate her because she’s done it single-handed,” said the playwright.

Arundhati and artistic director Surendranath thanked several theatre personalities, including Minister for Kannada and Culture Umashree and MP B Jayashree, who were present for extending support.

A painting depicting a boy with a mask by city-based artist Yusuf Arakkal and dedicated to Shankar was unveiled on the occasion.

A copper and brass mural by S G Vasudev, who has also designed Ranga Shankara’s logo, featuring names of all donors so far, was also unveiled.
