Vivek Hebbar Gets Bail in Iron Ore Scam

BANGALORE: A CBI Special Court on Monday granted bail to Vivek Hebbar, son of Yellapur MLA Shivaram Hebbar, who was arrested in connection with iron ore export scam in Belekeri Port in Uttara Kannada.

Another accused Prakash Hegde, managing director of Dream Logistics, was also granted bail in the case. These two are the first ones to be released on bail since the chargesheet is filed.

On September 30, the CBI court had granted bail to both but there was one more case pending against them for their alleged involvement in selling inferior quality iron ore fines to an exporting firm in Goa. On Monday, the court granted them bail in this case too. They are expected to be released on Tuesday.

Earlier, they were not released because the CBI Economic Offences Wing, Chennai, that was supposed to file a chargesheet in 60 days did not file it on the ground that the advocate had sought bail. The court directed Vivek to produce a bond with two sureties and surrender his passport. It also directed him to appear before the CBI court once every month.

The chargesheet stated that Vivek’s firm had illegally exported around 9 lakh tonnes of iron ore from Belekeri Port.
