HC Stays Demolition of Layout

BANGALORE : Giving a breather to residents of Sai Shakti Layout at Bettadasanapura, the High Court on Friday stayed the demolition of the buildings allegedly constructed illegally.

The residents had moved the court challenging the deputy commissioner’s order to demolish the “illegally constructed” buildings in the layout without any giving prior notice. The demolition was scheduled for Saturday. The officials had requested police protection against possible attacks by residents.

According to officials, the 12-acre-26-gunta layout was formed illegally in the green belt. However, the residents told the High Court that they had obtained permission from the Gram Panchayat and other authorities concerned.

Life Term Upheld for 13 Rioters

The High Court on Friday upheld life imprisonment awarded to 13 of the 23 accused in the 1993 Badanavalu communal riots near Mysore which saw the death of three.

The court upheld the conviction against 13 while acquitting seven for lack of evidence.

According to the prosecution, it all started with a Scheduled Caste man making an animal offering near a temple in Badanavalu village of Nanjangud taluk. On March 25, 1993, an armed mob attacked some members of the SC community. Three people were killed.

In 2010, all 23 were awarded life term by the trial court. Subsequently, they approached the High Court.
