BBMP Wakes Up, Vows to Distribute Uniforms

BANGALORE : Well into the academic year, the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP)  has finally decided to distribute uniforms to students at its schools.

Education Standing Committee chairperson Dharmraj told Express that he had been elected head of the panel only ten days ago.

“After receiving information that students in 153 BBMP schools have not received their uniforms, I instructed the Palike’s education officer to speed up the distribution,” he said.

“Around 15,000 schoolchildren will get their uniforms in the next 15 days. On Monday, the BBMP will distribute uniforms to students at its school in Srirampuram, where 800 students are studying. The delay was from the state government’s side,” Dharmraj said.

Congress corporator of Gurappanpalaya ward,  Rizwan Nawab, however, said it was the corporation’s responsibility to distribute uniforms and sports equipment to its schools.

“The government will spend on their schools. Similarly, BBMP schools have to be maintained by the corporation. The BBMP has failed to mobilise funds and has hence been unable to distribute supplies on time,” Nawab  said.
