Dowry Drives Woman to Death

BANGALORE: Unable to bear alleged harassment for dowry, a 23-year-old newly married woman committed suicide by hanging at her parents’ home in National Games Village (NGV) in Koramangala on Monday.

The deceased Rashmi was married to Muralidhar, an engineer, three months ago. Muralidhar, a native of Davanagere, works with a private company in the city.

Police said Rashmi had returned to her parents’ home a month ago and alleged that Muralidhar and her in-laws were harassing her for dowry. Her parents tried to talk to her in-laws, but could not resolve the issue. On Monday evening, a depressed Rashmi locked herself in a room and hanged herself. Koramangala police are on the lookout for the accused, who are absconding.

8 Bikes Gutted 

Eight motorcycles were gutted in the parking lot of an apartment at Raghavendra Colony in Gangammanagudi police limits on Monday night.Police said that around 11.30 pm, the residents of the apartment noticed smoke emanating from the basement. They alerted the watchman who informed the fire and emergency personnel. The personnel rushed to the spot and doused the fire in 30 minutes.  “An electrical short circuit may have caused the mishap. The exact cause is yet to be ascertained. BESCOM officials visited the spot and are preparing a report,” said fire officials.
