BANGALORE: A 35-year-old security guard opened fire  to nab thieves who had come to steal construction material at Dommasandra in Sarjapur in the early hours on Saturday.

The arrested were identified as Shiva Reddy (22) and Manju, (25), residents of Anekal. Two of their accomplices, however, managed to escape.

Police said that around 4.30 pm, four men came in a truck to an under-construction building at Narayanaguru Layout near Muthyanallur Cross.

Security guard Uttappa noticed the thieves escaping with a loaded truck and opened fire at the rear wheel of the truck. Reddy and Manju tried to escape.

Uttappa, along with another security guard Santhosh, chased them while the other two managed to escape leaving the truck at the spot.

Uttappa immediately alerted the police who rushed to the spot and took the accused into custody. A police officer said the security guard has a valid arms licence.

On September 3, Uttappa had fired at a group of six men, injuring one persons, in the same area. The thieves had come to steal iron rods stored at an under-construction building.
