BENGALURU: An alert ATM security guard foiled a robbery bid by two armed men who barged into the ATM kiosk and tried to break open the machine.

The incident was reported in Indiranagar police station limits in the early hours of Monday.

The accused were caught by passersby and thrashed before being handed over to the police.

The accused have been identified as Ramkumar Gupta (28), a native of Bihar, and his friend Mathew (22), a resident of Lakshmidevinagar in Indiranagar. The two were working in a bar at Trinity Circle.

Police said the duo came on a bike to the Canara Bank ATM kiosk on CMH Road after consuming alcohol.

Security guard Venkatakrishna, after noticing that they were drunk, locked the ATM kiosk door. The angry duo broke open the door and tried to attack him with lethal weapons.

Meanwhile, Venkatakrishna managed to call the police and alerted them about the incident.

Night beat police rushed to the spot but the accused tried to escape. But two youths who were going in a car noticed the accused and nabbed them.

Hearing the commotion, some residents rushed to the scene and thrashed the accused. The police, who grilled Gupta and Mathew, learnt that the two wanted to make easy money.

They had planned the robbery and even bought the weapons a few days ago, police said.
