PUDUCHERRY: The Department of Physical Medicine at Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER), has taken steps to create awareness on the role of physical medicine and rehabilitation (PMR) in medicine by conducting a continuing medical education (CME) programme PMR -- Disability and Beyond, on Sunday.
The programme aims at improving quality of life. According to the press release, medical rehabilitation is not limited to one organ system and the goal of PMR is ‘to maximise abilities in spite of disabilities’.
Awareness of the role of PMR in society, even among medical fraternity, is limited, the release said.
Speakers from Christian Medical College, Vellore and JIPMER provided insight into topics related to spinal cord injury, rehabilitation of children and the aged, burns and cancer. ‘How to assess disability?’ and the role of physiotherapy, occupational therapy, prosthetic and orthotics were discussed.
