BENGALURU: Residents of Gulbarga Slum in Vasanthnagar have claimed officials of the Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) on Saturday visited their houses and directed them to vacate immediately as the area was set to be razed.
The residents said they had been staying at the slum for about 20 years and that evicting them at short notice would be hard on them.
Hanumant Surpur, a resident, said no eviction notice was served in the past and added that it was a sudden move by the civic body.
“Almost all residents have Aadhaar cards while many have ration cards and voter IDs. Suddenly, on Saturday, the BBMP engineer came to the slum and directed everyone to move out by Monday morning.
He said that bulldozers would be brought to raze the houses. Where do we go?” he asked.
BBMP Officials in The Dark
When contacted, BBMP officials said they were unaware of this development. Vasanthnagar BBMP engineer Muralidhar also said he did not know anything about the matter.
When asked if any representatives from the slum had met him, he replied in the negative. BBMP administrator T M Vijay Bhaskar also said he was unaware of the eviction.
