Leave After 6 pm, Department Tells Women Staffers

BENGALURU:  Women employees working with the state Department of Public Instruction have been directed not to stay back in office after 6 pm. A circular issued on September 1 by the joint director (administration) gave this directive.

The circular does not explain the reason for this restriction. Authorities are calling it a ‘routine’ circular. The circular, a copy of which is with Express, reads: “We have received objections over women employees staying back and working even after 6 pm. From here on the women employees are directed not to stay at office after 6 pm.” When Express contacted K S Satyamurthy, commissioner of the Department of Public Instruction, said, “It is just a routine circular. There is no need for them to stay after 6 pm.” Sources from the department said the circular had been issued after women employees complained.
