IISc Student Attacked on Campus

BENGALURU: A student of the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) was allegedly assaulted in the campus on Wednesday night.

The Students’ Council members were informed about the incident around 10.30 pm. On the Facebook page — Students’ Council IISc — the members narrated the story. The victim Sushil was going for dinner  towards NIAS gate with a female student around 9.20 pm. The duo were near URC gate (between NIAS and D-gate), when a speeding car almost brushed past against them. The car was driven by Raghavendra, son of Narayana, an employee at the IISc director’s office. When Sushil and his friend protested, Raghavendra allegedly got down from his car and picked a quarrel but soon left the scene.

After about half an hour, when the students were on their way back from NIAS gate, Raghavendra came back. This time with four of his friends. Raghavendra got down from his car and started assaulting Sushil. His friends caught hold of him and controlled the situation. However, the men threatened the duo of consequences if they reported the incident to the police.

The council members lodged a complaint at Sadashivanagar police station around 12.30 am. Soon after which, the police raided the staff quarters and took the accused into custody.

The student’ council has demanded the removal of the chief security officer, who they claim reached the spot after an hour and refused to take any action against an employee’s son. They also demanded that CISF personnel be deployed for campus security. Sandeep Patil, DCP (Central), said, “The accused has been arrested. We will provide needed security in the campus.”

When Express contacted IISc director, he was unavailable for comment.
