The ‘Plastic Beda’ initiative saw participation from traders and restaurateurs. Vasanthnagar corporator Sampath Kumar and BBMP joint commissioner Sarfaraz Khan were present.

The list provided to traders had the suppliers’ contact numbers and addresses. It listed banned products like styrofoam cutlery and suggested alternatives like those made of arecanut.

It suggested aluminium foil containers, wooden spoons, jowar spoons instead of plastic spoons. Similarly, traders were given details on where they can get clay.

The city generates 4,000 metric tonnes of solid waste per day and 350 to 400 metric tonnes of it is plastic. Currently a ban on manufacture, supply, sale, use of plastic bags is in place.
BBMP has the power to levy a fine ranging from `500 on domestic users to `5,00,000 on manufacturers for use of plastic.
