Bengaluru building collapse: Contractor arrested, two more feared trapped

BENGALURU: One person has been arrested in connection with the under construction building collapse in Bellandur which took place in the city on Wednesday. 

The building contractor Srinivasa Reddy, who was absconding following the accident, was nabbed by the police on Thursday morning. 

The under construction PG for women, collapsed killing at least three construction workers who were in the building at the time of the incident. 

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the building was being constructed using sub standard materials. 

According to sources, Reddy played a key role in the construction scam. "He had collected huge sums of money from the other builders involved in the project and was overseeing the construction work. It is suspected that he played foul with the money and used sub standard materials for the building."

A day after the incident, police officials have lodged an FIR against the builders involved in the project. However, the role of builders have to be examined as no all of them were directly involved in the construction work, a senior official told Express. 

The complaint has been registered under section 304 IPC (Culpable homicide not amounting to murder) 

Two more feared trapped

Rescue personnel believe that at least two more people are feared trapped. On Wednesday evening, even though the personnel found one more person trapped in the building, it was not possible to extricate him from the rubble as he was stuck beneath a beam. Around 4:30 am on Thursday, the rescue team manage to extricate his body. 

As on 1:30 pm on Thursday, the rescue operations continued to look for any more probably survivors under the debris.
