Tipu Sultan's palace is Bengaluru's favourite heritage image

BENGALURU: Do you have a favourite heritage monument in Bengaluru? Then send it in to Wiki Loves Monuments (WLM), a photo competition organised by the online portal and running this month.

You may think that your neighbour’s 100-year-old house should be documented but, sadly, participants are only allowed to follow ASI-protected monuments list. It leaves Bengaluru with few sites, when compared to the rest of the state.

The city has eight such protected sites and the most popular seems to be Tipu Sultan’s Palace. It is one of the most frequently submitted image. According to Kiran Ravikumar, a city-based design engineer and volunteer at Wikipedia, most of the contributors from Bengaluru work with the IT industry. There are entries from students too.

“This is an opportunity for us to promote our heritage and monuments by digitalising it online,” says Abhinav Srivastava, an executive committe member with the Wikipedia India Chapter. According to Srivastava, in 2013, Bengaluru contributed 500 pictures and most of the pictures were of  the Tipu Sultan’s Palace.

The competition, started in 2010, has received nearly 1.5 million photographs. India participated in the 2012 and 2013 editions. From India, Karnataka and UP saw the most participation. Across the world, Germany uploaded the most number of images.

Send an entry and get a chance to win a `1,000 cash prize or a scholarship of up to `2,000 to Wikimania 2017 in Montreal.

The Wiki Loves Monuments competition will be conducted by Wikimedia India Chapter and winning top 10 images from the country will be sent to the international team. Thirteen countries from the globe will be participating in the competition and each country will send in top 10 images.
