Bengaluru lakes encroachment: Officials may face criminal action

BENGALURU: The Legislature Committee probing encroachment of lakes in Bengaluru is set to recommend strong measures, including filing criminal cases, against officials who are found to have abetted encroachments in collusion with land-grabbers.

The committee will submit its report by December, said its chairman and Speaker of the Legislative Assembly, K B Koliwad. The committee members, who had assessed the ground realities with regard to existence of lakes in the city, have completed 99 per cent of the work of gathering information. About 5,000 files have to be examined.

“We will submit a report by the end of December with strong recommendations to send land grabbers and corrupt officials who colluded with them, to jail,” Koliwad said.

Case against eight JD(S) MLAs adjourned

Speaker Koliwad, who heard the arguments on the petition to disqualify eight JD(S) MLAs from Assembly membership, adjourned the hearing to September 22 due to lack of necessary documents. Koliwad has asked JD(S) state president H D Kumaraswamy to provide a copy of the party constitution, details of the legislators who are elected on JD(S) party symbol and documents on the whip issued to party legislators to vote for the party candidates in the recent Legislative Council and Rajya Sabha elections.
